Skin Problems – The Most Common Issues and How to Treat ThemNagyítás

Even with a careful skincare routine, our skin doesn't always behave the way we'd like. From breakouts to pigmentation — these concerns are incredibly common and affect almost everyone in some form. The first step is always the same: understanding what's actually causing them.

Acne and Breakouts

Acne is one of the most common skin concerns, caused by overactive sebaceous glands, clogged pores and the proliferation of bacteria (mainly Cutibacterium acnes). It doesn't only affect teenagers — adult acne is increasingly common, particularly triggered by hormonal changes, stress or an unsuitable skincare routine.

What can you do? Gentle but effective cleansing, salicylic acid (BHA) products, niacinamide, and — in more severe cases — consulting a dermatologist. Never pick or squeeze spots: this causes inflammation, scarring and post-inflammatory dark marks.

Redness and Rosacea

Redness can have many underlying causes: a weakened skin barrier, temperature changes, reactive ingredients, alcohol consumption or rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition characterised by persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels and symptoms that worsen with heat or sun exposure.

What can you do? Fragrance-free products with soothing ingredients (centella asiatica, allantoin, avenanthramides), sunscreen every day, and avoiding known triggers such as alcohol, spicy food and hot drinks. For rosacea, professional help from a dermatologist is essential.

Pigmentation and Dark Spots

Dark spots are caused by uneven melanin production. This can result from sun damage (sun spots), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — dark marks left after acne or an injury — or hormonal changes (melasma). Any skin tone can be affected, though it tends to be more visible on deeper complexions.

What can you do? Consistent sunscreen use is the single most important step — without it, nothing else will work. Active ingredients that are clinically proven to fade existing spots include vitamin C, niacinamide, alpha-arbutin and kojic acid.

Dehydration

Dehydrated skin is not a skin type — it's a condition that can affect any skin type. Signs include a feeling of tightness, fine lines that appear more prominent (especially when smiling), and a dull or flat appearance, despite regular cleansing and moisturising.

What can you do? Hyaluronic acid serums and moisturisers applied to damp skin so the ingredient can actually bind moisture. Look for barrier-strengthening ingredients too — ceramides and panthenol — which prevent moisture from evaporating throughout the day.

Enlarged Pores and Oily Skin

Pore size is largely genetic — they cannot truly be "shrunk." What we can do is prevent them from filling with oil and debris, which makes them appear larger. A shiny T-zone and oily skin surface are signs of excess sebum production.

What can you do? Regular chemical exfoliation (BHA, e.g. salicylic acid), niacinamide (which helps regulate sebum production), and lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers. Harsh physical scrubs and aggressive cleansers tend to have the opposite effect — they strip the skin and trigger even more oil production in response.

Summary

Most skin concerns have solutions — but effective treatment always starts at the root cause, not the symptom. Once you understand what's driving the problem, you can build a far more targeted and effective routine. In upcoming posts, we'll go deeper into the recommended ingredients and routines for each of these concerns.
